Travel Club
Greetings from the Media Arts Academy Centinela. My name is Tom Hyatt, I am an advisor here at the Media Arts Academy.
I am also the advisor for the first on campus organization formed at our first year start up school......
THE TRAVEL CLUB
First destination.....
New York City!
May 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
We wanted to give students the opportunity to see the “Big Apple” and participate in the culture and history. So, with a mixture of student passions and teacher know how we have spent the past six months raising the money, exploring the city (virtually) and preparing ourselves for travel.
Many of our students have never traveled on an airplane, let alone across the United States to experience a Broadway show, charge to the top of the Empire State Building, visit the Statue of Liberty, and more. We wanted to offer that opportunity to them. We also wanted to offer them exciting and unique ways to receive academic credit while developing their personal projects.
Our trip to New York is academic, educational, spiritual, physical, and emotional all rolled into one.
Each student will be updating this blog with past assignments, fundraising experiences, travel expectations and more.
Once on the trip, our Travel Club Captain, Danny Madrigal, along with myself, will upload photographs and log our experience right here on this blog!
History and Culture
The group spent the semester preparing for this trip in their weekly reflection groups. We have talked about such topics as the history of New York City, American urban culture, diversity in America, the working poor, New York culture, and general New York tourist information. Students completed assignments on the Empire State Building, Time Square, and more.
Fundraising
Students in the Travel Club worked daily (at break and lunch) at the MAAC SHACK, an on campus student store, which provides sugarty and salty treats at a discount. (We even provide the occassional pizza party)
Students also sold pizza cards, Carl Jr. Coupon Books, and candy bars. We also reached out to our families, friends, and colleagues for donations and were showered with financial love.
